Alright, friends — raise your hand if you’re a true crime fan!!! There’s at least a few of you out there, I know it:). Here’s a list of podcasts and documentaries that I love — I originally wrote this up in an email to a fellow true-crime fanatic, but I figured I would share it with you guys, too!
Criminal I think I’ve mentioned this podcast before, but it’s worth mentioning again. There are some episodes that I still think about to this day, like this one and this one. They’re on the shorter side, which is perfect for unloading the dishwasher or walking the dog.
In the Dark This might be my favorite of the bunch, and I think it gives Serial a run for its money. The second you start listening, you’ll be hooked. If you have children…especially a young boy, maybe don’t listen to it? I’m already planning on never letting my future children outside on their own — like, ever.
Someone Knows Something I’m currently listening to the second season (after I finish writing this I’m starting episode 8) and I think I like it so much in part because the reporter is such an empathetic, kind guy. His personality really shines through and I love how not reporter-y he is. Also, cold cases are my fave.
My Favorite Murder I don’t really know how to describe this one because it’s literally just two funny friends chatting about murder. I know a lot of people, myself included, who are OBSESSED (apparently, the two women that started the podcast now get recognized on the street) and a few people who can’t stand it. Either way, start from the beginning.
Accused Another riveting cold case that sucks you in. I like how this podcast almost reads (sounds?) like a novel, and the reporter is super likable.
The Keepers A 7-series documentary-series about the unsolved murder of a nun in Baltimore in the late 1960’s, I just binge-watched the whole thing in two days and I need someone to watch it as well so we can please talk about it!!!!
Making a Murderer I’m sure you’ve heard about this one already! I’m still undecided on whether or not he’s guilty. Either way, this is one of the best shows to binge-watch if you’re avoiding life or stuck at home sick.
The Jinx I get chills just writing that, and if you’ve watched it, you know why. It’s definitely one of the spookier series (with dramatic reenactments), but it’s worth watching it through because the ending is I-N-S-A-N-E. That’s all I’ll say. Go watch it.
Okay, I’m going to wrap this up! These are the documentaries I’ve watched recently — my favorite being “Mommy Dead and Dearest.” If you can, get a friend to watch it with you. You’ll be screaming “WTF?!” the entire time.
I haven’t read as many true crime books, but my sister-in-law has, and she recommends Tana French’s series.
