Book Recommendations?

I’m going on vacation next week, and all I plan to do is read on the beach. (I’m sorry, that is such an obnoxious sentence). I have a terrible habit of only finishing books about 20% of the time (also reading the last page, busted…) so I’m looking for something that I can’t put down.

Books I’ve finished recently and enjoyed:

Not That Kind of Girl
Blood Bones & Butter
The Age of Miracles

A book I didn’t finish:

The Goldfinch

I’ve been meaning to read this, which my mom loves, or Wild, which one million friends have recommended. You guys, read anything good recently?

  1. WILD IS AMAZING. So is Tiny Beautiful Things, also by Cheryl Strayed. or Bird by Bird (which is on my to-read list), or the Amy Poehler book?

  2. Oh Joy – I picked The Goldfinch as MY beach read while I was home in Brazil. I cannot seem to finish it – and neither do I want to…but I’m already 400 pages in…disappointing, to say the least.

I know that not many Canadian authors get exposure in the U.S. but the Giller prize finalists this year were great! The winner, Us Conductors is fantastic…though maybe not beachy enough. A good one is The Girl Who Was Saturday Night – a fantastic, dark humour representation of Quebec culture, I really really reccommend it. Also, Amy Poehler’s Yes Please is so fun too…easy breezy, and she’s so positive, it’s refreshing!

  3. Do you like YA? Anything Sarah Dessen is amazing. I also really loved Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park. Hmm… Megan McCafferty’s Sloppy Firsts is also one of my all-time faves. Have a great vaca and enjoy the sun! 🙂

  4. If you haven’t seen the movie, I think you’d make it through Gone Girl! It’s perfect for the beach. Also I just started The Tastemakers and am enjoying it so far.
    Madness – Marya Hornbacher
MWF Seeking BFF – Rachel Bertsche
    Lucky- Alice Sebold
The Fault in Our Stars – YA fiction, but so so good. HAPPY VACATION!

  5. I second those above – Wild and Gone Girl are incredible books you can’t put down. One of my all time favorites my mother recommended: Water for Elephants- fabulous. Also, as a psychologically minded person like yourself, I really like Malcolm Gladwell and The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin is what I’m enjoying right now 🙂

    Happy vacation!

  6. Recently, I’ve really, really enjoyed …
    – The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters
    – The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller – just a lovely, gorgeous read
    – In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods by Matt Bell – this is kind of an unusual book and won’t be to a lot of people’s tastes (which I totally understand) … you’ll know in a page or two if it’s for you. But this book absolutely stunned me.

    Enjoy your vacation!
