The other day, I walked by a mom leading her wobbly toddler down a series of steep steps, and as I passed, I heard a little whimper-y sound — it clearly took a lot of focus and determination to get his little legs safely down the steps.
And then the mother said simply, “One step at a time,” in the gentle singsongy voice that a mother does best. In that split second that our lives overlapped, it flooded me with reassurance — even though she meant it literally, it was exactly what I needed to hear.
I’ve since thought about that moment over and over. It’s such an important, simple reminder. One step at a time. Whatever worries you, whatever is on your mind these days, take it one little step at a time.
