Last night, I went over to my friend Chelsea’s house, and she handed me this incredible cocktail. I barely ever make drinks at home, but after having this, I’m inspired to try more. It was downright delicious — the flavors complex and not at all too sweet. Chelsea sent me the recipe, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a summery cocktail recipe. Don’t be turned off by the balsamic vinegar and black pepper and salt, it works perfectly.
Strawberry Basil Gin and Tonic
Adapted from A Cozy Kitchen
1 pint strawberries, hulled and sliced
scant 1/2 cup sugar
pinch of salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
handful of fresh basil
4-6 ounces gin
lemon zest for garnish, plus a few drops of fresh lemon juice
In a bowl, combine the strawberries, sugar, pinch of salt, pepper, and balsamic vinegar. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then purée it in a food processor or blender. Run the mixture through a fine sieve, and set aside.
Muddle the basil at the bottom of a glass. Drop in a few ice cubes, pour in the gin, then fill with the strawberry syrup, garnishing with lemon zest, a few drops of lemon juice and basil leaves. Serve!
(You could also make this drink in a shaker like Chelsea did, if you’re feeling fancy. It makes it slightly frothy, which I love.)
