My friend, Ella, always has these duck and sweet potato treats in her pockets for her puppy, Schooner — and the dogs go nuts for them. But they’re expensive and made in China, so I’ve come up with a DIY version. Since making these, I’ve had a few other dog moms ask for the recipe, so I figured I’d post it here. This a great project for a lazy Sunday.
Proscuitto Wrapped Sweet Potato Treats
2 sweet potatoes
1 packet of proscuitto (doesn’t have to be fancy)
Preheat oven to 200 F*. Peel sweet potatoes, and cut them into matchsticks — about the size of fries. Cut them in half or thirds so each one is about an inch in length. Arrange them on a sheet tray and bake for 1-2 hours, or until they start to dry out. They should still be firm.
Take a strip of proscuitto and cut it into small strips. Wrap them snugly around the sweet potato pieces and place back on baking sheet seam side down. Bake for an additional 2 hours, or until the sweet potatoes are soft but somewhat dry. That’s it! I haven’t met a single dog that doesn’t love these. They should last for about a week in an airtight container.
Note on oven temp: my oven is not particularly hot, so 200 was perfect. You basically want to be dehydrating the sweet potatoes at a low temperature, not roasting them. If your oven runs fairly hot, I’d try out 150 first.
